The presentation is based on a paper co-authored with Massimo Riccaboni and Armando Rungi.

This paper tests the contribution of foreign management on a firm’s competitiveness. We show that a firm becomes more competitive after hiring at least one foreign manager and the impact is stronger for domestic firms. For our purpose, we use a novel data set on 165,084 managers working for 13,106 companies in the United Kingdom. Our identification strategy includes both a difference-in-differences analysis in the within-treated sample and then a matching technique, both challenging reverse causality. Our results are robust after applying a stochastic frontier analysis to determine a firm’s technical efficiency as an alternative indicator for firm-level competitiveness. Our findings suggest that limits to managers’ mobility, as in the case of a Brexit event, may hamper the allocation of productive resources.
