Asian Economic Integration: Using the ADB’s Multi-Region Input Output Tables (MRIOTs) for the Analysis of Tariffs and Protectionism
Client/Funding Institution
Asian Development Bank (ADB)
Abstract
Rising tariffs and increased protectionism have the potential to impact on the functioning of international trade and global value chains (GVCs). Trade networks are vulnerable to disruptions and rising trade costs caused by higher tariffs, especially in the interconnected world we live in characterized by long and complex value chains. To understand the extent of risk of future tariff-related trade shocks an approach to modelling the impact of such shocks is required, with Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models being a common approach to this. The aim of this work is to apply an existing modelling approach (the model of Caliendo and Parro 2015) to the Asian Development Bank’s Multi-Region Input Output Tables (MRIOTs) that will allow for an analysis of the impact of tariffs imposed anywhere in the world on trade and welfare of Asian economies.
