The SEE Jobs Gateway Database – a labour market database on the Western Balkans – is now available via the wiiw website

The SEE Jobs Gateway Database is a joint project between the World Bank and the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw). It provides a comprehensive set of labour market indicators for the six Western Balkan countries of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia and for the four EU peer countries of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia and Hungary. The database can be accessed via a user-friendly online tool, allowing the creation of graphs, as well as downloading of the data. Access to the data is free of charge.

The database covers a unique and detailed set of labour market indicators based on Labour Force Surveys (LFS) of the Western Balkan countries and Eurostat. The dataset is harmonised across indicators, age groups and educational attainment. It currently comprises more than 19,300 time series, which are available on an annual and a quarterly basis (where available) from 2010 until the second quarter of 2019 (2019 Q2).

The database covers four parts:

  • Key economic indicators (GDP, labour productivity, inflation)
  • Labour market indicators (working-age population, employment including informal employment, atypical employment, unemployment)
  • Labour market data at a sub-national level
  • Data on earnings and unit labour costs

The SEE Jobs Gateway Database serves as an easy-to-use reference tool, facilitating comparisons across indicators, countries and time. It is an important source of information for national policy makers, international organisations, international financial institutions and the academic community.

Drawing on this database, annual flagship reports – Western Balkans Labor Market Trends – have been published in the spring of each year since 2017. These reports are also available on the above-mentioned website.

The available information is comprising data only prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis.
