Norbert Funke is a Senior Research Associate at wiiw and a consultant specializing in economic policy training of government officials. His work focuses on macroeconomic analysis and on monetary, fiscal, and debt policies, with a regional expertise on Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, SE Asia, and Africa. Norbert spent the majority of his career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), contributing to country and regional surveillance, IMF‑supported programs, and—most prominently—capacity development. From 2021 to 2025, he served as the inaugural Director of the IMF’s Caucasus, Central Asia, and Mongolia Regional Capacity Development Center (CCAMTAC). Between 2012 and 2016, he was Director of the Joint Vienna Institute (JVI). Before joining the IMF in 2000, he held positions at McKinsey & Company, the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD), and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. A German national, he holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Cologne.
