wiiw NTM Data

August 2020

Despite the growing importance of non-tariff measures in international trade, data on non-tariff measures (NTM) usable for econometric analysis is still scarce. A promising data source allowing for a panel structure of NTM data is the Integrated Trade Intelligence Portal (I-TIP) of the WTO.

Our dataset is a compilation of NTM notifications to the WTO (accessible via I-TIP-Goods) for more than 100 importers and over 5,000 products for the period 1995-2019, complemented by data of the Temporary Trade Barriers Database (set up by Chad Bown and published by the World Bank with updates until 2016).

The data has been enriched by matching HS 6-digit product codes through a multiple-step imputation procedure, allowing for econometric analysis.

This work was initially produced as part of the PRONTO (Productivity, Non-Tariff Measures and Openness) project, which has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no 613504.

For the 2019 update, financial support of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (Austrian Central Bank, Anniversary Fund, Project number: 17822) is gratefully acknowledged.
