Mahdi Ghodsi is a Senior Economist at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), where he leads the International Economics research group. He also teaches as an external lecturer at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) and serves as a Senior Fellow and Head of the Economy Unit at the Centre for Middle East and Global Order (CMEG) in Berlin. His research and professional work focus on applied econometrics, macroeconomic modelling, and data science, with particular expertise in global markets, trade policy and regulations, financial and labour market dynamics, migration policy, the economics of sanctions, Iran’s economy, and the political economy of social movements and institutions. He has extensive experience in leading international research projects, advising on economic strategy, and delivering data-driven policy insights. Mahdi holds a PhD in Economics from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and a second PhD in International Economics from the University of Warsaw. He also serves on the editorial board of the scientific journal International Economics.
