Europe in a Fragmented World: Geo-economic and Geo-political Dynamics

Jointly organised by wiiw and oiip

Today's world is characterised by volatility, uncertainty, and unpredictability. The emergence of a new multipolar order, authoritarianism, regional conflicts, and militarism has challenged the liberal world order, multilateralism, and its institutions. The European Union, founded on liberal values, is struggling to adapt to the shifting global economic and political power balances. Simultaneously, European democracies and the European integration process are under attack. They are being undermined by authoritarian populism, nationalism, growing social disparities, the impacts of artificial intelligence, deindustrialisation, sluggish growth, and economic dependencies on finite resources and fragile supply chains.

The seminar series, titled Europe in a Fragmented World: Geo-economic and Geo-political Dynamics, jointly organised by the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw) and the Austrian Institute for International Affairs (oiip), aims to analyse geopolitical and geoeconomic trends and their impact on Europe’s future from an interdisciplinary perspective. The series seeks to contribute to the ongoing debates on how to reposition Europe within an increasingly politically unstable and economically competitive international system.
