About GEOII
Covering the years 2010–2023, examining 21 neighbouring countries in the Western Balkans, Eastern Neighbourhood, Türkiye, and the Southern Neighbourhood, GEOII offers a data-driven perspective on the EU’s regional footprint — highlighting both strengths and vulnerabilities. It is built around three core dimensions — trade, finance, and policy interconnectivity — and draws on 43 indicators to assess how the EU compares with the US, China, and Russia in shaping economic ties with its neighbourhood.
Our main finding: The EU remains the most deeply interconnected economic power across its neighbourhood — but China and Russia have gained ground in critical areas, and the EU’s overall lead is narrowing.
